The Raven & The Dove

Updated: Sep 27

When Noah was at sea during the big flood he released two birds, both of significance in their actions.

The Raven.

[Genesis 8:6 KJV] And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

[Genesis 8:7 KJV] And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.

The Raven did not come back.

Now there is someone else who is like the Raven.

[Job 1:7 KJV] And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Job 1:7 was repeated again in Job 2:2 - emphasis.....

"To and fro"

The Dove

[Genesis 8:8 KJV] Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;

[Genesis 8:9 KJV] But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters [were] on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.

[Genesis 8:10 KJV] And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;

[Genesis 8:11 KJV] And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth [was] an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

[Genesis 8:12 KJV] And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.

The Spirit of God like a Dove.

[Matthew 3:16 KJV] And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

The Raven an abomination.

[Leviticus 11:13 KJV] And these [are they which] ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they [are] an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

[Leviticus 11:14 KJV] And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;

[Leviticus 11:15 KJV] Every raven after his kind;

[Leviticus 11:16 KJV] And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

With these scriptures in mind , please look at the attached videos.

As an adjective, raven refers to a lustrous black color.

But as a noun, a raven is also any of several larger birds of the genus Corvus, of the family Corvidae.

(Crow also)

Noted also:

[Job 38:41 KJV] Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

[Matthew 5:45 KJV] That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

As a footnote , "to & fro" is quite worthwhile searching in the Bible. There is some interesting context.

Thinking of the dove being killed, I looked up no peace, the scriptures were quite fitting( as Always, they are)

Amen Steve. I love the ability to look up a word and see all the references in The Word, so many times I'm astonished by how The Bible covers everything, every layer, layers even we havent uncovered yet. It is truly a ever flowing fountain and a living Word.

Yes quite the contrast in the Lord's creation......one used to represent Righteousness & the other capable of being influenced by darkness. I like birds, they represent the freedom of Spirit that only Christ can give. Wedge Tailed Eagles down here are my favourite, when I go walking across the salt marshes , I watch them float above in the sky looking down for reptiles & rodents to smack on 👍

This is certainly some things to think about here. We have all sorts of birds here in Appalachia; I’ve noticed differences in character with many of the birds. The crows certainly keep their distance and often seem to complain about my presence. The doves on the other hand come right up to the window trying to “get” my attention. The blue jay is another; he comes and goes as quick as he can and also provides a warning call for the unfamiliar. We have also had a white dove who came and made his home just outside our garage; this was a complete surprise. But, to return to the scriptures, it is interesting how the raven and the d…
